Dyslexia is a term commonly used for children who struggle with learning to read.
It can show up in different ways for different children.
Common Signs You Might Notice
- difficulty recognising words
- letter reversals
- trouble sounding out words
- avoiding reading or writing
- losing their place when reading
- mixing up similar-looking letters
- struggling to copy from the board
You may also notice:
- frustration or low confidence
- reluctance to go to school
- after school meltdowns
- saying things like “I’ can’t do this”
Behaviour Is Communication
Children don’t always have the words to explain what they are experiencing.
Instead, their behaviour often shows us.
What looks like avoidance may actually be your child’s way of showing you that trying to read or write actually feels incredibly difficult.
Our children always want to please us, but sometimes the effort is just too much, and they give up.
Asking them to “try harder” is not always the solution. Sometimes the reason for their struggles lies beneath what we see on the surface.
A Gentle Next Step
If you’re noticing several of these signs, it may be helpful to explore what’s going on a little further.
