Signs of Retained Primitive Reflexes

Having a child who is struggling at school, no matter how hard they try, is distressing for parents.

You may be wondering what’s going on beneath the surface.

Sometimes, the answer lies in early development.

Primitive reflexes develop before birth, and inhibit naturally during infancy.

When retained, they can contribute to learning and behaviour challenges.

Common Signs You Might Notice

Children with retained primitive reflexes may show:

  • restlessness or fidgeting
  • difficulty concentrating
  • poor coordination
  • trouble sitting still
  • challenges with reading or writing
  • difficulty processing what they hear
  • emotional overwhelm or anxiety

You may also notice that although your child is trying really hard, they become frustrated, and are easily overwhelmed.

Sometimes, these behaviours can look like signs of ADHD.

Behaviour Is a Message

What can look like “inattention” or “misbehaviour” is often your child’s way of coping with something that is difficult for them.

These behaviours are worth exploring, rather than dismissing.

When we are able to look beneath the behaviour, we can address the underlying reason for your child’s struggle.

Why Early Development Matters

Early movement and sensory development build the foundation for all later learning – not only in the classroom, but throughout life.

When there are gaps, children may need extra support to strengthen these areas.

Fortnately a simple assessment can identify the underlying issues that may contribute to your child’s struggle.

From there, we can devise a plan to help your child to move forward, preparing them for lifelong learning.

A Gentle Next Step

If you’re noticing several of these signs, it may be helpful to explore this further.

Early understanding can make a big difference in your child’s confidence and learning experience.
