Why Do ADHD Behaviours Get Worse After School?

Does your ADHD child’s behaviour seem to get worse when they come home after school?

Do they hold it together all day—only to fall apart at home?

You might notice:

  • meltdowns after school
  • anger or frustration
  • exhaustion or shutdown

This is very common.

Holding It Together All Day

For some children, holding it together all day at school  takes enormous effort.

They are:

  • trying to focus
  • managing noise and visual stimulation
  • coping with expectations
  • dealing with social pressures

By the time they get home, their system is overwhelmed.

Home Feels Safe

Children often release their emotions in the place they feel safest.

This means home becomes the place where everything comes out – a bit like releasing the valve on a pressure cooker..

A Different Way of Seeing It

Instead of asking:

Why are they behaving like this?

You might gently ask:

What has my child been holding in all day?”

A Gentle Next Step

Understanding this pattern can help you respond with more calm and connection.

Your child’s behaviour is bringing us a message – it is their way of communicating their overwhelm

This is something I have seen in many families I have worked with during the last 20 years (and also experienced myself).

You are not alone.
