When a child is struggling with reading and learning at school, we often focus just on what appears on the surface..
But sometimes, the answer lies a little deeper.
How Children Learn
Children take in information through their senses.
This information is then processed by the brain to make meaning.
Three key sensory systems support learning:
- Visual processing– processing what we see
- Listening– processing sounds and language
- Sense of balance – being able to sit still and focus
When Things Feel Out of Sync
If these systems are not working together smoothly, learning can feel much harder.
You might notice:
- difficulty tracking words on a page
- trouble focusing
- restlessness or fidgeting
- becoming overwhelmed in busy environments
- stress and anxiety
Supporting the Foundations for Learning
The foundations for learning begin in infancy and early childhood, through early movement, play, and sensory experiences.
When any of these foundations are a bit “wobbly” many children struggle with reading and other classroom learning.
It’s possible to gently address these underlying foundations, supporting your child’s lifelong learning.
A Gentle Next Step
When we look beneath the surface, we can better understand what your child needs.
Working together, we can help your child to build those strong foundations for learning.
