Why Can’t My Child Follow Instructions?

Does your child struggle to follow even simple instructions?

You might say:
Go and put your shoes on and get your bag…”

…and only one part gets done—or none at all.

This can feel frustrating and confusing.

It May Not Be What You Think

Children who struggle to follow instructions are not usually meaning to be “difficult”.

They may simply be unable to process multiple pieces of information at once.

What You Might Notice

  • difficulty following multi-step instructions
  • forgetting what they were asked to do
  • needing instructions repeated
  • becoming overwhelmed when too much is happening

Some children can only process short pieces of information at a time.

Busy Environments Make It Harder

In places like classrooms, there is often a lot happening at once:

  • background noise
  • other children talking
  • visual distractions
  • trying to sit still

This can make it very hard for a child to focus on the teacher’s voice.

A Different Way of Understanding

When a child struggles to follow instructions, it can help to ask:

“How much is my child actually able to process right now?”

This small shift can change how we respond.

A Gentle Next Step

If your child is finding this difficult, it can help to explore how they are processing what they hear.

With support, children can build these skills over time.

A listening assessment is a good place to start.
