Is ADHD a Behaviour Problem—or Something Deeper?

An holistic view of ADHD behaviours invites us to look more deeply, exploring beneath what we see on the surface.

When we see behaviours like restlessness, impulsivity, or inattention, it’s natural to focus on trying to change them.

But what if these behaviours are actually telling us something?

Behaviour as Communication

From an holistic perspective, behaviour can be seen as bringing us a message.

When children feel stressed, they can’t always find the words to express themselves, so they communicate through their behaviour.

This behaviour may be indicating feelings of:

  • overwhelm
  • stress
  • developmental needs
  • sensory processing difficulties

They often need our calm presence to help them to settle, and regulate those big feelings.

Looking Beneath the Surface

Rather than asking:

How do we stop this behaviour?

We might ask:

What is my child needing right now?”

Usually it’s the presence of a calm carer to help them to feel safe.

Feeling safety in your calm presence, your child might find it easier to let us know what is worrying them.

A Gentle Next Step

When we understand what sits beneath behaviour, we can begin to respond in ways that support real, lasting change.

Counselling and parent coaching offers gently support for parents, based on understanding what you might be experiencing.
