Why Does my Child Struggle to Focus at School?

It can be confusing when your child is bright and capable—but struggling to focus in the classroom.

You might be hearing from teachers that they are distracted, not paying attention, or falling behind.

This can feel worrying.

It May Not Be What You Think

When a child struggles to focus, it is not always about attention alone.

For many children, the classroom environment can feel overwhelming:

  • noise
  • movement
  • social pressure

When this happens, their nervous system shifts into a stress response—and focus becomes much harder.

We Can’t Learn When We Feel Overwhelmed

When a child feels unsafe or overwhelmed, their brain prioritises survival—not learning.

This is why:

  • attention decreases
  • listening becomes difficult
  • emotions increase

A Gentle Next Step

If your child is struggling to focus at school, it can help to look beyond behaviour and explore what may be contributing to their experience.

You’re not alone in this.
