Why is My Child so Anxious?

If your child seems constantly worried, sensitive, or easily overwhelmed, you may be wondering why they always seem so anxious.

While you might know your child is safe, their nervous system can be bringing a different message.

Common Signs of Anxiety

You might notice:

  • overthinking or worrying
  • avoiding new situations
  • emotional outbursts
  • physical complaints like tummy aches
  • difficulty separating from you

What Might Be Going On?

Some children are naturally more sensitive, and will react quickly to what is happening in their environment.

They will let us know through their behaviour.

They may be:

  • feeling overwhelmed by their environment
  • struggling to process sensory information
  • finding school or social situations difficult
  • feeling pressure to perform at school

It’s Not a Failure

Anxiety is not a sign that something is “wrong” with your child.

It is a signal that something is worrying them, and they may need support.

Their behaviour is often an indication that something deeper is happening for them.

Your calm presence can help them to find feelings of calm too.

This is not always easy when their stress levels can easily trigger our own stress responses.

A Gentle Next Step

It’s OK to ask for help if you find their behaviours are triggering you. This is quite normal, and you are not alone.
