Is It School Anxiety or Something Else?

When your child is struggling at school, it can be hard to know what’s going on.

You may be wondering:

  • Is this anxiety?
  • Is it ADHD?
  • Is it a learning difficulty?

How It Can Look

Children who feel overwhelmed may:

  • struggle to concentrate
  • appear restless or distracted
  • avoid schoolwork
  • become emotional or seem overly reactive

The Missing Piece

Sometimes, anxiety is the underlying factor – the body’s natural response to feeling stressed.

When a child feels unsafe or overwhelmed, we can see it in their behaviour.

Their ability to focus and pay attention is affected.

Learning becomes difficult.

Looking at the Bigger Picture

Rather than seeing separate problems, it can help to look at how these challenges are connected.

Not all behaviours need a diagnosis.

Understanding this can change how we respond—and how we support our children.

The symptoms of these behaviours often overlap – anxiety can look like ADHD, dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

Beneath the Behaviour

Looking beneath the behaviour can help us to identify the areas where your child is struggling.

Behaviours don’t always need a label.

Often, we find gaps in early stages of development that interfere with later learning.

Identifying and addressing these can lead to big changes for both you and your child.

A Gentle Next Step

Trying to understand this on your own can feel confusing and overwhelming.

Holistic counselling with Rosalind can help by looking more deeply into what might be below the surface of your child’s struggles.

We can work together to find solutions that suit both you and your family.
