When School Feels Too Much for Your Child

Some children find school overwhelming.

Sometimes, just going to school can feel really difficult.

Even when they want to do well, they may struggle to cope with:

  • noise and sensory input
  • social demands
  • pressure to achieve
  • simply being with so many people in an enclosed space

What You Might Notice

  • school avoidance or refusal
  • emotional exhaustion after school
  • difficulty concentrating
  • anxiety or
  • headaches, tummy aches before school

These can all be signs that your child’s nervous system is struggling to cope.

A Different Way of Understanding

These behaviours are your child’s way of communicating when they can’t find the words.

You can help by:

  • offering empathy
  • listening to understand
  • offering support
  • talk about feelings

With the right support, children can build the foundations they need to feel safer and more confident in themselves,

Learning will follow.
